Come for the beach. Stay for the people, the sunsets, the breakfast burritos... and probably another cup of coffee.
There are beach towns, and then there is Cayucos.
It's hard to explain this little Central Coast town until you've spent some time here. There's just something about it. Life feels slower. People smile at each other. You start recognizing familiar faces. And somehow a daily sunset stroll on the beach becomes part of your routine without you even realizing it.
I swear, some of the happiest people live here.
And that's exactly why I think Cayucos makes such an amazing family getaway.
The Small-Town Vibe Is the Best Part
Cayucos isn't a place where you come with a packed itinerary and rush from one attraction to another.
You wake up, grab coffee, walk around town, head to the beach, browse the little shops, find something good to eat, and figure out the rest as you go.
The kids can get sandy. You can throw on a sweatshirt when the evening fog rolls in. And at the end of the day, everyone heads toward the beach for one of those Central Coast sunsets that never really gets old.
A sunset stroll on the beach is basically a Cayucos requirement.
No reservations. No rushing.
Just salty air, sandy feet, and your people.
Yes, Get the Breakfast Burrito at the Gas Station 🌯
I'm serious.
One of my favorite things about small towns is that some of the best food comes from places you would never expect.
And in Cayucos, don't overlook the gas station breakfast burritos.
They're one of those local things you just have to know about. Grab a burrito, head toward the water, and congratulations—you've pretty much figured out the perfect Cayucos morning.
Fancy? Nope.
Delicious? Absolutely.
My Coffee Stop: Dot Spot ☕️
Now let's talk coffee because this one is important.
Dot Spot is my go-to coffee shop in town, and I stop there a couple of times a week.
It's owned by Dotty, one of the sweetest young women you'll meet, who has turned making coffee into an art. There's something special about walking into a small local coffee shop where the person behind it genuinely cares about what she's creating.
The coffee is fantastic, the atmosphere fits Cayucos perfectly, and it's exactly the kind of small business I love supporting.
If you're visiting Cayucos, put Dot Spot on your morning list.
Actually, you'll probably go once and then end up back there the next morning.
I get it.
Italian Food in a Beach Town? Absolutely. 🍝
For dinner, Cafe della Via is one of those places I love recommending.
It's cozy, the Italian food is incredible, and it has that warm small-town feeling that makes dinner feel like part of the experience instead of just somewhere you stopped to eat.
And if you happen to get Jordan as your waitress, you're in good hands. She's the best!
Good Italian food, wine, family, and a little beach town outside the door?
That's a pretty solid vacation night.
Saturday Night at Schooners 🎶
If you're in Cayucos on a Saturday, Schooners is always a good time.
Grab some food and drinks, enjoy the ocean-town atmosphere, and catch the live music. It's one of those places where families, locals, visitors, and friends all seem to mix together.
That's Cayucos.
It doesn't feel overly polished or touristy. It feels like a beach town where people actually live—and you're invited to join in for a few days.
And Don't Get Me Started on the Antique Shops
Seriously.
Do not skip the antique shops.
Cayucos is made for wandering around without anywhere you absolutely need to be, and browsing the antique stores is part of the fun.
You'll find everything from coastal treasures and vintage pieces to those completely random things you didn't know you needed until you're suddenly trying to figure out how you're going to fit them in the car.
Give yourself time to explore.
That's half the fun.
The Happiest Little Beach Town
What I love most about Cayucos isn't one restaurant, one shop, or even the beach.
It's the feeling.
It's walking down the street and people actually saying hello.
It's grabbing coffee from someone who remembers you.
It's kids running around with sandy feet.
It's wandering through an antique shop just because you have nowhere else you need to be.
It's Saturday night live music.
It's breakfast burritos from a gas station.
And it's walking down to the beach at the end of the day because the sunset is starting and somehow everyone knows it's time to go watch.
That's Cayucos.
For families, I think that's what makes this place so special. You don't have to constantly entertain everyone. The vacation is simply being here together.
Come for a weekend and you'll understand.
Stay a little longer and you might start wondering what it would be like to live here.
And honestly?
I wouldn't blame you.
Come Get a Little Salty 🌊
If you're dreaming about a family beach vacation that feels less like a tourist destination and more like getting invited into one of California's sweetest little coastal towns, put Cayucos on your list.
I'll help you find the right place to stay, figure out what your family will love, and point you toward the little local spots that make this town so special.
Just promise me one thing:
Don't skip the sunset.
